Hubble Edwin Powell

(1889-1953)

American astronomer Edwin Powell Hubble was born in Marshfield in state Missouri. Father Hubble served in the Chicago insurance firm, children in family were brought up in conditions of the most severe discipline.

Having arrived in 1906 in the Chicago university, Edwin Hubble worked in laboratory known physics Milliken. However it has not wanted to be engaged in physics and was directed to England to continue education at the Oxford university, studying... The Roman right.

Having come back home, Hubble has received the diploma of the lawyer. But the lawyer he has worked all year, and then has decided "to throw jurisprudence for the sake of astronomy". Edwin Hubble has returned to the Chicago university and started to work as assistant of the Jerkss observatory, near Chicago. But Hubble's scientific work has interrupted. There was a first world war, and he was called in a field army. After returning from army Hubble worked in observatory Mount-Willson in California.

Hubble's works have begun modern anagalactic astronomy. In 1924. Edwin Hubble by means of a telescope with diameter of a mirror on observatory Mount-Willson has proved 250 sm, that the Andromeda's fog and some other fogs have a star structure and are far outside the Milky Way.

Thus, Hubble has established, that our galaxy not unique star system in the universe.

The next years Hubble investigated many fogs which he named anagalactic. Now they refer to as galaxies. Appeared, that is far from being all these galaxies have the spiral form. Many of them elliptic, and the some people irregular-shaped. In 1925. Edwin Hubble has made the first detailed classification of galaxies under their forms and other features. In 1929. Hubble has found out, that between beam speeds of movement of galaxies and distances up to them there is a linear dependence (Hubble's law), and has defined numerical value of factor of this dependence (Hubble's constant). This opening became an observant basis of the theory of the extending universe.

Edwin Hubble was one of oustanding astronomers of XX century and the pioneer of studying of far star systems. In 1927 he has been elected by a member of the National academy of sciences in Washington.
